New Esso Supreme 25% renewable diesel now being trialled across SE England

Esso has launched a limited trial of its new Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel in the South East. Available for customers to purchase at 20 Esso retail sites, the fuel is the first of its kind to be sold on Retail sites in the UK. The new fuel is suitable for use in all diesel engines compatible with B7 fuel.

  • Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is now available for customers to purchase at 20 sites across the South East of England
  • It is made with a minimum of 25% premium hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which is made from waste cooking oil, refined into a high-quality fuel component and blended with conventional diesel and our proprietary Esso Synergy additive
  • The fuel has 15% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) than our regular diesel (1)
  • For every 50 litres of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel used, there is an average saving of 25kg in lifecycle GHG emissions (2)
  • This initial trial is part of ExxonMobil’s plan to invest $15 billion globally on initiatives to lower greenhouse gas emissions, as it continues to innovate and provide solutions to help meet society’s evolving needs (3)

Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is made with a minimum of 25% premium renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) derived from RTFO(4) compliant wastes and residues – in this case, used cooking oil. The fuel has 15% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) than our regular Synergy Diesel(1), meaning that for every 50 litres of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel used, there is on average a 25kg saving in lifecycle GHG emissions(2)

The average UK diesel car driver travels 9,400 miles per year. If they were to switch to Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel, the annual saving in lifecycle GHG emissions would be equivalent to the emissions associated with fuelling that vehicle for two round trips from London to Edinburgh(5) (approximately 1,410 miles).

Patrick Rutherford, Esso UK Retail Sales Manager, comments: “At Esso, we are developing high-quality biofuels that have less environmental impact than conventional fuels. We’re excited to be bringing the Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel trial to UK drivers.  It has all the great advantages that our customers have come to expect from high quality Esso fuels, but with the added benefit of being an immediate, lower carbon intensive choice.”

Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel: Quality and performance guaranteed
Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is a high-quality diesel fuel, which includes a premium renewable ingredient and our Esso Synergy additive. It is suitable for all diesel engines that are compatible with B7 fuel, and is fully interchangeable with regular and premium diesel.

Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel contains our proprietary Synergy additive, designed to help clean vital parts of your engine, including your car’s fuel injectors. A cleaner engine means better performance.

20 Participating trial sites across the South East

$15 billion global investment: Research and Development at ExxonMobil
Globally, we plan to provide more than 40,000 barrels per day of lower-emissions fuels by 2025, and have a further goal of 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. Achieving this goal will help society reduce more than 25 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions from the transportation sector.(5)  For more information on this, and how ExxonMobil is investing more than $15 billion through to 2027 on initiatives to lower greenhouse gas emissions, please refer to Advancing climate solutions progress report (exxonmobil.com).

Notes to Editors

RENEWABLE
Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is made with a minimum of 25% premium hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) which is made from independently verified, RTFO compliant used cooking oil.

QUALITY
Used cooking oil is refined into a high-quality fuel component and blended with conventional diesel and Esso Synergy additive, delivering great protection and cleaning power for engines.

PERFORMANCE
Containing Esso’s proprietary Synergy additive, the fuel has been designed to help clean vital parts of your engine. A cleaner engine means better performance.

15% LOWER EMISSIONS
The fuel has 15% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) than our regular diesel(1) . If you use 50 litres of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel, the lifecycle GHG emissions associated with fuelling your vehicle will on average be 25 kg less than if you had used 50 litres of Esso Synergy diesel(2).

TWO ROUND TRIPS FROM LONDON TO EDINBURGH OF EMISSIONS PREVENTED
15% lower lifecycle GHG emissions means that for the average UK diesel car driver, using Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel instead of regular diesel can prevent approximately 1,410 miles worth of lifecycle emissions associated with fuelling that vehicle per year(1) .  That is equivalent to over two round trips from London to Edinburgh(5)

COMPATIBLE
A drop-in alternative fuel to diesel, Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel is suitable for use in all diesel engines that are compatible with B7 fuel, it is fully interchangeable with conventional diesel.

(1) Comparison is versus regular Esso Synergy Diesel.  Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel contains a minimum of 25% renewable diesel.  Choosing Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel instead of regular Esso Synergy Diesel results in 15% lower greenhouse gas emissions when comparing the emissions over the life cycle of each fuel.  Fuels vary both in their total life cycle emissions (i.e. from production to use or “well to wheel”) and in how the emissions are distributed throughout that life cycle.  The method we used to calculate life cycle emissions and emissions reduction is outlined in the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligations Order 2007 (SI 2007/3072) as amended (“RTFO”). (2) Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel has 15% lower life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than our regular diesel (1).  Calculations indicate that every 50 litres of Esso Supreme 25% Renewable Diesel used would, on average emit 133.7 kg of GHG emissions (expressed in CO2 equivalents, or CO2e) over the total lifecycle of that product. This compares with 50 litres of Esso Synergy regular diesel (B7), which would emit 159.1kg CO2e over its total lifecycle.
