Life rings improve water safety at Dalgety Bay

Safety is always top priority at Mossmorran, so Fife Ethylene Plant was happy to help a community project to improve water safety for people in Dalgety Bay.

Swimmers will now be able to go into the water with more confidence, and parents have more reassurance when their children are playing outside, thanks to a donation from the plant, which has provided life-saving rings with throwing ropes and posts at sites along the town’s coastline.

Following a spate of water rescues around Scottish waters in recent years, including a teenager at Dalgety Bay, the local community council contacted FEP to ask for assistance in helping to make the area safer by providing the life-saving equipment.

The rescuer in the Dalgety Bay incident said it would have been easier for them if there had been a life ring at the scene, and the community council asked local businesses to help out. FEP got behind the project, with a donation of £2,000 to buy the safety equipment, which has been mounted along the shoreline by Balfour Beatty.

The life ring stations along the beach and harbour areas are branded with plaques bearing the ExxonMobil logo.

Sean McLanaghan from Dalgety Bay and Hillend Community Council, said: “As a community council, we are constantly trying to improve our community, but with limited budgets and volunteers’ time we simply cannot address many of the things we would like to.

“This support from ExxonMobil will allow us to address what we see as a critical shortfall in water safety equipment. It is very much appreciated and has been very well received in the local community.
“It will provide peace of mind for the many thousands of people who use the seafront and water every year.”

Martin Burrell, Plant Manager at FEP, said: “Safety is our mantra at Mossmorran, so when the community council got in touch to ask for our help with this project, we were only too happy to help.

“We hope they never have to be used, but if there ever is a need, the equipment is there to help save lives.”
